SUSEGAD???
A perfect word
the metro masses would surely vouch for…
Here’s why,
If Life
equals: Do what you want, as long as you want, wearing what you like, lazing
around, enjoying the company of the like ones with no clock ticking, what do
you have to say. Pipe dream?? Nope
Susegad,
derived from the Portuguese word sossegado ("quiet"), it is
normally understood as the relaxed, laid-back attitude towards life that is said to have
existed historically in Goa, a former Portuguese Territory. Goans believe in, "a relaxed
attitude and enjoyment of life to the fullest". As described by one Sunday Times writer,
Goa is, "South Asia's Latin Quarter: indulgent, tolerant, capricious, steeped in a tropical
lassitude and wedded to the sea". However
it is slowly falling out of use as the stress of making money bulldozes the old
Indo-Portuguese lifestyle into touch. It’s a loss, but an inevitable and
unstoppable loss. Yet, small pockets of pure Susegad remain sealed by the
locals who understand preservation, restoration, conservation and maintenance. Inspired by the very word, the couple
Norman and Carole Steen have started their own bed and breakfast called Casa
Susegad assuring that time stops here for their guests. Located Halfway between
Ponda and Margao in South Goa, it stands as an Oasis for those tired of their
busy lives and bustling cities.
Try this out, Enjoy the life of
Susegad, rest, move at your own pace, be a part of this unique lifestyle.
Signing off with a question though, Is
the loss we spoke of really inevitable, the beauty that Goa holds now is coming
to minimal for the need of better infrastructure, state of the art facilities,
contemporary structures replacing the charm and warmth that old Portuguese
villas have, how far should we go to refashion Goa since the very reason we
come here is to find that natural bliss and heritage it embraces?
Think Goa…Go Goa..
